During my visit, I explored several fascinating places around the city and nearby areas. From ancient temples to historic forts and peaceful natural spots, Latur offers many interesting experiences for travelers.
Here are some of the best things to do in Latur based on my experience.
1. Visit Siddheshwar–Ratneshwar Temple
One of the most important religious places in Latur is the Siddheshwar–Ratneshwar Temple. The temple is located about 2 kilometers from the Latur bus stand, making it easy to reach for visitors.
This temple is considered one of the ancient village deity temples of Latur and holds great religious significance for the local community. The architecture of the temple reflects an old traditional style, which attracts both devotees and visitors.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Siddharameshwar and is associated with the Shaiva tradition. Devotees regularly visit the temple to offer prayers and seek blessings.
During the holy month of Shravan, the temple becomes especially lively. It is beautifully decorated, and a large number of devotees gather here for prayers and celebrations. Special arrangements are made during this time, and Mahaprasad is served to the devotees.
Another major celebration at the temple is Mahashivratri, when large religious programs and events are organized. Devotees from nearby areas and from Latur city visit the temple to participate in the celebrations and experience the spiritual atmosphere.
The temple follows traditional rules and rituals, and many people come here throughout the year to pray and connect with the peaceful spiritual environment.
2. Explore Ganj Golai – The Heart of Latur
A visit to Latur is incomplete without exploring Ganj Golai, which is considered the central point of the city.
Ganj Golai is a circular marketplace from where multiple roads spread out in different directions. Because so many streets connect at this round junction, it has become one of the main commercial and meeting points in Latur.
The circular structure of the Golai is unique. From this center point, roads extend toward various parts of the city. For first-time visitors, the layout can be confusing because many roads look similar.
Around the Golai, you will find many shops, markets, and local businesses. People come here for shopping and daily needs, which makes the area busy throughout the day.
The market atmosphere is lively, and the surrounding streets are always active with visitors and local residents. Since many roads meet here, visitors sometimes find it difficult to remember where they parked their vehicles or which direction they came from.
Despite that, the place is an interesting spot to experience the local life and commercial energy of Latur.
3. Discover the Historic Kharosa Caves
Another fascinating place to visit near Latur is the Kharosa Caves, located about 45 kilometers from the city. The caves can be reached easily by road through Nilanga.
These caves are carved into a hill made of reddish-colored stone, which gives the site a unique appearance.
At the entrance of the caves, visitors can see a chaitya hall with small cells on both sides. These cells were used by monks for meditation and living. Inside the caves, there are beautiful carvings and sculptures, including an image of Lord Buddha along with artistic designs on the walls.
Historical records suggest that the caves were discovered between 1885 and 1901 during the work of James Burgess, who served as the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India. The caves are believed to have been built around the 6th century during the Gupta period.
In ancient times, this region was part of Dakshinapatha and came under the rule of several dynasties, including the Mauryan Empire of Emperor Ashoka and later the Rashtrakuta dynasty.
Inside the caves, visitors can explore large halls with pillars, though some of them are now damaged due to the passage of time. The caves contain sculptures connected with Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions, including carvings of Shivling, Nandi, Lord Ganesha, and the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu.
One of the most interesting carvings represents the mythological story of Samudra Manthan, showing gods and demons working together with the serpent Sheshnag.
The surroundings of the caves are peaceful and calm. From the cave area, visitors can also enjoy beautiful views of the nearby hills and landscape, making it a great place to relax and explore history.
4. Explore Ausa Fort
If you enjoy history and architecture, Ausa Fort is another place worth visiting near Latur.
The fort is located about 3 kilometers south of Ausa town and around 20 kilometers from Latur city. It is considered one of the important historical forts in the region.
Historical inscriptions mention this place during the rule of the Chalukya dynasty, particularly during the reign of King Vijayaditya. The area was also associated with Digambar Jain religious centers, indicating its cultural and religious importance in ancient times.
The fort has strong fortification walls, bastions, and large entrance gates, which reflect the defensive architecture of medieval forts in Maharashtra.
Inside the fort complex, there are several historical structures. Some buildings are still standing while others are now in ruins. Important structures inside the fort include Rani Mahal, Lal Mahal, and other administrative and residential buildings.
The fort also has water storage structures and wells, which were essential for supplying water to soldiers and residents during times of siege.
Over time, the fort came under the control of different rulers. After the rule of Malik Ambar and the Nizamshahi, the Mughals captured the fort during their expansion in the Deccan.
Later in 1676, the forces of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj attempted to capture the fort, but it was defended by the Mughal commander Barkhurdar Khan on behalf of Aurangzeb.
Eventually, in 1760, the Marathas captured the fort from the Nizam’s control after a military campaign.
Today, the fort remains an important heritage site where visitors can explore historical ruins, architecture, and the peaceful surroundings.
5. Visit Udgir Fort
Located near Latur, Udgir Fort is another historically important site that reflects the region’s rich past.
During the Bahmani Sultanate period, Udgir was an important city because it was located close to Bidar, which served as the capital of the Bahmani Sultanate. Several strategic forts and cities were located along this route, including Udgir, Dharur, and Daulatabad.
An important historical battle took place here in 1760 between the Marathas and the Nizams, where the Marathas emerged victorious. However, after the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761, the Nizams regained control of the fort.
Inside the fort, there are many fascinating structures. The pathways leading to the bastions are very narrow, allowing only one soldier to pass at a time. This design helped defend the fort during attacks.
One notable structure is the horse stable, which has recently been restored. Nearby, there are water tanks that were likely used for animals.
Visitors can also see a dargah of Hazrat Hafiz Sahib located inside the fort complex.
Another impressive structure is the Hawa Mahal, a three-storey building currently undergoing restoration. From the upper floors, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding areas and the entire fort complex.
The Chandni Burj, the highest point of the fort, offers a clear view of the entire fort and surrounding landscape. Cannons were placed here for defense, and one large cannon with Persian inscriptions can still be seen.
The fort also features an advanced water management system with tanks, pipes, fountains, and channels that supplied water throughout the palace.
The Rang Mahal area includes several rooms with beautiful arches and decorative carvings. Some structures may have been used as pigeon houses for sending messages between cities.
These features show how royal families once lived inside the fort complex.
6. Relax at Devarajan Talaab
If you are looking for a peaceful natural spot near Latur, Devarajan Talaab in Udgir is a beautiful place to visit.
The lake is large and wide, offering scenic views and a calm atmosphere. The surrounding natural landscape makes it a great location for relaxation and photography.
Water from a nearby dam flows into this lake when the dam fills up. There is an outlet system where water flows through and moves toward lower areas.
The area around the lake is quiet and relaxing, making it a pleasant place to spend time with friends or family.
Locals say that when the water level is high, the flowing water appears very clean. However, when the water level becomes low, the water may not appear as clear.
Despite that, Devarajan Talaab remains a peaceful and scenic destination where visitors can enjoy nature and take a break from the busy city environment.
